The University

UNICAMP is a pillar of academic distinction in Brazil, contributing 8% to the nation’s academic research and 12% to its postgraduate education. It distinguishes itself among Brazilian universities, leading in patent generation and boasting many per capita articles published annually in journals indexed by the ISI/WoS database. The university is a bustling academic community with around 34,000 students across 66 undergraduate and 153 postgraduate programs.

Annually, UNICAMP showcases an impressive tally of approximately 2,100 defended theses and dissertations, a testament to its vibrant intellectual environment. Remarkably, 99% of its faculty are adorned with doctoral degrees, underscoring the university’s commitment to high academic standards. This bastion of education and research dominates Brazil’s per capita ranking in scientific publications in internationally recognized journals. When gauging intellectual output relative to individual researcher contributions, UNICAMP emerges as the most prolific Brazilian university.

Each year, UNICAMP proudly sees about 800 doctoral candidates transition to graduates, an achievement that garners admiration even from academia in America and Europe. Over the past fifty years, the institution has been a crucible for over 65,000 young professionals through its undergraduate programs. Additionally, its alumni network, spread across various sectors such as corporations, government, and social organizations, significantly contributes to Brazil’s socioeconomic fabric. UNICAMP is not just an educational establishment but a cultural and scientific nexus, having been graced by eminent academic personalities like Cesar Lattes, André Tosello, Gleb Wataghin, Vital Brasil, Giuseppe Cilento, Octávio Ianni, Almeida Prado, and Bernardo Caro, among others.

Geographically positioned in São Paulo State, UNICAMP operates across three Campinas, Piracicaba, and Limeira campuses. It encompasses 24 dynamic teaching and research units and boasts an extensive health complex, including two central hospital units in Campinas. The university is also home to 23 interdisciplinary centers and nuclei, two technical schools, and many support units, forming a vibrant community of approximately 50,000 people engaged in myriad research endeavors.

UNICAMP, an autonomous entity in educational policy, operates as an autarchy. While it maintains its academic independence, it relies on subsidies from the São Paulo State Government, alongside national and international funding bodies, for its financial sustenance.
The university’s main campus, named after its visionary founder Zeferino Vaz, lies in the Barão Geraldo district, a 12km journey northwest of Campinas city center. This “Zeferino Vaz” University City is not just an educational space but a symbol of innovation and progress.
Officially inaugurated on October 5, 1966, UNICAMP, despite its relatively recent foundation, has rapidly evolved into an institution renowned for its robust education, research, and societal engagement traditions. The genesis of UNICAMP was a strategic response to the burgeoning demand for skilled professionals in a region that, in the 1960s, represented a significant portion of Brazil’s industrial might and workforce.

UNICAMP’s inception broke the mold of traditional Brazilian university creation, which typically involved a mere aggregation of courses and faculties. Instead, it was conceived as a holistic entity, encompassing its entire present-day structure. This forward-thinking approach was evident even before its official establishment, as it had already attracted over 200 international professors from diverse fields and around 180 from Brazil’s premier universities, setting the stage for its future as a hub of global academic excellence.
